Basketball

KS-HAWAI‘I 76 – HPA 39

The Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i girls varsity basketball team remained undefeated and continued asserting its isle-wide dominance with a 76-39 beatdown of Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

The Warriors established a small lead early, outscoring Ka Makani 21-14. HPA remained within striking distance thanks to Brooke Samura, who put up ten points during the opening frame — going eight-for-eight at the free throw line. Between Samura and Rosey Wawner, Ka Makani was ten-for-ten in free throw shooting during the first quarter — while KSH sank five of seven.

The Warriors increased their lead to double digits by halftime, dominating the second frame 15-9. KSH was led by Maela Honma with nine points on the quarter. Samura matched Honma — shooting three-for-four at the charity stripe and sinking two threes — but was HPA’s only scorer during the quarter.

Ka Makani was stifled by the Warriors in the second half, as Samura continued to be the sole source of HPA’s points.

Keanu Huihui scored a whopping 14 points for KSH during the third quarter to lead KSH over HPA 22-10. Samura scored those ten points by sinking a three-pointer and going seven-for-eight in free throws.

The Warriors closed out the win in the fourth quarter, crushing Ka Makani 18-6. Honma led the way with 11 points. KSH kept out of foul trouble and allowed Samura less free throw opportunities — just three, two of which she sank. Samura also scored two field goals.

Honma led KSH with a season-high total of 32 points. She has averaged 21.4 points per game in BIIF play this season.

Huihui totaled 30 points and went seven-for-nine in free throws. She has been the spearhead of the Warriors’ offense this season, scoring an average of 26.5 ppg and holding a free throw percentage of 78.2.

Samura scored a game high 35 points — nearly matching her season average of 35.1 points. She went 18-for-21 at the free throw line on Monday — a season high.

KSH rolled to 10-0 in BIIF play and 12-4 overall, and is three more wins away from a perfect regular season.

The Warriors’ next outing will be 6 p.m. today at home against Honoka‘a High (5-3).

KSH will play its senior night game on Jan. 22 against Pahoa High, then will end its season Jan. 25 across district lines at Waiakea High.

WAIAKEA 53 – KEALAKEHE 35

Waiakea High’s boys varsity basketball team ended a two-loss streak, dominating Kealakehe High 53-35 in BIIF Div.-I action on Monday in Kailua-Kona.

This was a critical win for the now 3-5 Warriors, who are looking to keep a hold on their No. 4 BIIF DI standing — in order to reach the postseason. The win over the Waveriders was also WHS’ final regular season DI test.

Waiakea will remain dormant this week, returning to action Jan. 23 in Kapa‘au for a matchup against Div.-II powerhouse Kohala High (6-0 BIIF, 11-2 ovr.). The Cowboys will be looking to add to their 11-win streak as they enter their final five regular season outings.

At 3-8, Kealakehe will not only need to win as many of its four remaining outings as it can — it will also need to rely on DI rivals to lose in order for the ‘Riders to pass through the bubble into playoff contention.

The ‘Riders will next face Ka‘u High (1-7) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Pahala.

JV score: Waiakea won 36-25.

HPA 54 – CLA 29

HPA’s boys varsity basketball team ended a short losing streak, routing Christian Liberty Academy 54-29 on Monday night in Kea‘au.

Monday’s match was rescheduled from last Tuesday (Jan. 9).

The victory provided some relief from what has been a tough season for Ka Makani. HPA dropped its previous two games — taking back-to-back losses to Pahoa High and KS-Hawai‘i.

Now 2-4, Ka Makani will look to make the best of the late season in order to enter BIIF Div.-II play-in or playoff contention.

Following a Tuesday home game against Hilo High (results will be published later), HPA will take another southbound road trip — facing Ka‘u High (1-7) on Thursday in Pahala.

CLA has suffered an even more arduous season, and has struggled to get much of anything going. The Canefire’s record is 0-5, it has not scored more than 40 points during any matchup and has lost each match by an average score of 65-27.

CLA will have played at home Tuesday against Kea‘au High (results will be published later). Its next outing will be Friday on the road at Kohala High.

The Canefire’s best shot at a win will be a Jan. 22 home matchup against St. Joseph School — which stands in the cellar of BIIF Div.-II at 0-8.

PAHOA 35 – KEAAU 30

Jaylynn Kaawaloa Alidon had a big game, leading the Daggers with 18 points.

Pahoa moved to 3-6, and is now on a two-game winning streak — also defeating Christian Liberty last week. Next, the Daggers will face inter-district rival Ka‘u High (2-7) on Thursday in Pahoa.

A match between Pahoa and Parker school scheduled for Monday was postponed — the date is to be announced.

Kea‘au fell to 2-7, its losing streak extending to five games after the loss to Pahoa. On Saturday, the Cougars suffered another loss — 58-35 to Hawaii Prep— dropping their record to 2-8 and losing streak to six games.

Kea‘au has only two games left in the regular season, both at home, and no remaining BIIF Div.-1 outings.

Today, the Cougars will host Parker School (3-4), tipping off at 6 p.m. Kea‘au will have ten days off before its season finale — Jan. 27 against Christian Liberty Academy (0-8).

KONAWAENA 62 – KA‘U 37

Konawaena High’s boys basketball team routed Ka‘u High 62-37 on Saturday afternoon in Pahala.

The loss dropped the Trojans to 1-7, increasing their loss streak to five games.

Ka‘u will have to turn things around quickly in order to enter BIIF play-in or playoff contention. Four games remain for the Trojans, their next being a road test on Thursday night at HPA (2-4).

At 7-4 in BIIF play, Konawaena is in the hunt for a BIIF Div.-I playoff berth. The Wildcats will have plenty of downtime before and between their final two outings — Jan. 23 at HPA and Feb. 1 at Honoka‘a.
